When I moved to Baltimore, I was struck by the number of homes constructed of stone, brick, and formstone (a material I had never seen before coming here). I was surprised to find that the usually cold and foreboding materials somehow felt warm and cozy within these Baltimore neighborhoods. The years of passed-down knick-knacks, ceramic cats, and pride that spilled onto the pervasive marble steps appeared as nests in a tree of mortar and community.
This piece is an homage to Baltimore's neighborhoods; it is constructed entirely from photos taken on walks throughout the city, and it speaks to the beauty of building community with what you have while creating your own space where you feel secure and protected.
